Google I/O 2024 brought a wave of exciting announcements for Android users. Expectedly enough, most people are looking to the next best feature, but we can't lose sight of the important things that protect us, and our data. Though it's expected from a such a large company, it was nice to see that there was a strong focus on enhanced security features. Here's a breakdown of the main security improvements that were announced.
Protected One-Time Passwords
One-time passwords (OTPs) are a common target for malware. To defend it's users, Android 15 now hides OTPs by default during screen sharing, even if the app has screen recording permissions. This will help keep your data more secure and prevent unknown malicious apps from capturing your data.
Expanded Restricted Settings
Building on Android 13, Android 15 restricts access to even more sensitive settings, by default. This includes permissions like location, microphone, and camera. Also, when installing apps from outside the Google Play Store, users will now need to explicitly grant permission for these restricted settings. By doing this, it will give them more control over app's behavior.
Enhanced Screen Sharing Controls
In the Android 15 update, screen sharing security will be taken a step further with a new, prominent screen indicator. This indicator will clearly show when your screen is being shared with another app, making it easier to identify when your screen is being shared and to help stop unauthorized sharing. Additionally, a new one-tap button lets you easily stop screen sharing at any time.
Advanced Cellular Protections
To combat fraudulent cell towers (cell site simulators) that can be used for eavesdropping or sending spam messages, Android 15 introduces new cellular protection features. These features will help identify and warn users about suspicious cellular connections. Which, in turn, will add another helping hand in safeguarding the privacy and security of Android users.
These advancements highlight Google's commitment to making Android a more secure platform. By giving users more control and implementing stricter protections, Google is making it harder for malicious actors to gain access to your device. Now it's up to the users to make sure they are accepting these recommendations and proactively using the amazing features that Android provides, instead of bypassing them all.
